While enjoying food trucks and lawn games, associates celebrated JOH’s 60th Anniversary at the Annual Summer BBQ. The JOH Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony of Lou Crafts also took place during the event on Thursday, July 21, 2016. Crafts joined JOH in 1983 after spending his early career with Borden Cheese and Halpern Brothers Food Brokers.

Lou became an AE for Minnetonka, which was acquired by Colgate Palmolive. Lou was legendary at Colgate and known as “one page Lou” for his presentation prowess. He also managed Melitta Coffee to the strongest shares in the country.

During his tenure as a JOH HQ salesperson at Market Basket, Lou was admired by vendors for his natural sales talent. His ability to “get the order” made him one of the most successful associates in JOH history.

Lou understood the importance of having a sense of urgency, which Harry O’Hare, Sr. believed to be the most important quality of a successful salesperson.

In 2013, Lou retired after a 45-year career in food sales.

Congratulations to Lou Crafts on being named to the JOH Hall of Fame!

Pictured from left to right: NEFF members Jerry Larsson, JOH; Marilyn Mello, wife of the late William Mello; Jim Walsh, Sun Products and Kim Richardson Roach, Instream pose for a picture in the William Mello Lifetime Achievement Award area at the Cape House in Sandwich, Massachusetts.

JOH’s Vice President of Grocery, Jerry Larsson, was one of many food industry professionals in attendance at the New England Food Foundation (NEFF) open house to commemorate the official unveiling of the William Mello Lifetime Achievement Award area.

The NEFF is a nonprofit organization established to help children in need through charitable activities in the food industry. The main purpose of the NEFF is the continued operation of the Cape House in Sandwich, Massachusetts. The Cape House, with accommodations for up to 24 people and multiple outdoor activities such as soccer, volleyball, basketball and a private beach, is offered as a free vacation destination for qualifying children from all over New England.

"JOH is honored to be a part of this very special day," said Jerry Larsson. "Marilyn and William Mello have been so generous in their efforts with the Cape House. This award is well-deserved."

The Lifetime Achievement Award was presented to the late Mr. Mello at the 50th anniversary dinner in recognition of his time served as a Board Member, Treasurer, Past President, Co-chair of the Endowment Board and his assistance with a major renovation over several years to upgrade the Cape House and grounds.

Kim Richardson Roach, an NEFF member, said, "It also allows all the children who visit the house to learn more about the key people in the organization that make their vacations possible. The Cape House season is already open and kids are enjoying some vacation time on Triangle Pond."

Meet the Associate – Beth Wilde

Kids 360 Donates to Children’s Charities

Beth Wilde has been known to dodge tornadoes and attempt long drives in the worst types of weather. Her work takes her through two different time zones on a weekly basis. Is she a storm chaser? No! She is a JOH Retail Merchandiser from Fort Wayne, Indiana.

"I have been a JOH associate since August 2010 and I love it. I cover a 200 mile radius that includes 30 Walmart and 30 Kroger stores north of Fort Wayne and South Bend, Indiana. I appreciate the structure and direction I receive from JOH, as well as the flexibility in my schedule. I have three boys in sports, so this position is perfect for me.

The 'people' part of my job is my favorite. I develop great relationships with store managers and employees in order to deliver results for JOH clients. I believe that a smile, friendliness and persistence are a winning combination that helps me succeed in work and life.

Another benefit of being a JOHer is the network of other JOH retail merchandisers here in the Mid-West. We support each other when one of us cannot make it to a store because of weather or traffic. We make sure there is someone in the stores to get the job done. We are one big caring work family!"

October 2015 - JOH Associate Goes Above and Beyond

As the very first sentence of our mission statement reads, "JOH is all about doing the RIGHT thing." In October, John Kostecka, one of our JOH retail supervisors, went above and beyond to uphold this promise. While heading to Philadelphia for a store reset, John witnessed an industry-mate's car get hit on the highway. Not only did he stop and accompany this person to the hospital, but he stayed with him until he was ready to be released and drove him home.

"John's actions epitomize the strong character and deep compassion that our JOH associates exhibit each and every day," said John Saidnawey, President and COO.

JOH at the 2014 NY Produce Show

The 2014 NY Produce Show was fantastic. Once again JOH clients came in full force, generating excitement in the aisle. The turnout of the show exceeded 5,000 industry members.

The education at The Global Trade Symposium was top notch. It was amazing to see how fresh produce goes to market in other parts of the world. Sessions led by some of the world’s finest culinary schools were also very well attended and the local tours were a huge hit!

Best of all, our clients and customers were ecstatic with the overall show. We hope to get even more participation in 2015!

JOH Good Samaritan Carol Young
Sr. Customer Representative, Produce - Billerica Office

After hearing about a Billerica, Massachusetts family whose home was destroyed by a flood two years ago, Carol and her husband Mark, also Billerica residents, spearheaded an effort to help rebuild a house for them. Mark led the way through the planning, permitting, designing and funding process that took almost a year. He called on his contracting friends to lend their skills (foundation, framing, roofing, electrical, plumbing, drywalling); he arranged to buy building materials at cost. Carol's sister made drapes, her brother laid carpet.

This endeavor took the better part of 1-1/2 years. Carol spent all of her time off working on this project. End result - a mother, father and their four children now have a beautiful house they can call home.

Carol and Mark are pictured below, in front of the finished home.

John Saidnawey, COO and President

John has been with JOH for 29+ years and loves coming to work every day with all the great associates that help make JOH the world's best broker! When John is not at JOH, you will find him with the four loves of his life: His wife of 21 years Pam, sons JP (19 years old, Elon undergraduate) and Kyle (17, high school student) and of course, Maggie their 11 year old yellow lab.

Some of his favorite activities are singing (which apparently happens all the time), seeing the Rolling Stones (has seen them 30+ times) and playing the guitar, which he continuously tries to convince his wife sounds better the louder it is! He has a deep love for vacations, especially those where the ocean is blue, sun is warm, beaches are beautiful, coffee is bold, a Precor is close by and his family is all together.

John completed training with his buddy Mike and rode and raised money for two great charities: Best Buddies 100 mile ride on June 4th and The Pan Mass Challenge 192 mile bike ride (2 days) in early August. They surpassed their goal and raised over $32,000 for the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.

Bill is relatively new to JOH; however, he has been in the food business for 35 years! He works out of the JOH Mid-Atlantic, Tamaqua office and believes that his colleagues are the best to work with! In fact, he is such a fan that he has committed himself to cooking brunches and BBQ's for the office. They now call him "Bacon Boy – The Company Chef!"

Bill has been married to his wonderful wife Helen for 28 years and together they have two boys, Will and Patrick. When Bill is not working (or cooking!) you can find him reading, working out or fine-tuning his photography skills!

Melissa Passalaqua, Category Management Analyst, Corporate Office

Melissa has been at JOH since December 2008. She currently works as a Category Analyst in the Category Management Department. One of her favorite things about JOH is that it's a family-oriented company and she believes it is a great place for someone like herself, with young children. She has the flexibility to be with her kids whenever they need her, and that is extremely important to her.

Melissa and her husband Bill both grew up in Billerica, and recently moved back when they purchased a new home last May. They have an eight year old son, Jason, and a one year old daughter, Stella. Melissa is currently very busy fixing their new home, but in her spare time she enjoys scrapbooking. She has made albums of her honeymoon, her son's first year and she is currently working on her daughter's baby book. She goes away twice a year with a group of girls where they work on the albums all weekend! She also loves to entertain. In the summer, Melissa and Bill have guests over almost every weekend!

Marjorie Brenton, Account Executive, Specialty Division

Marjorie began working at JOH as an Account Executive in the Specialty Division in April 2011 as part of the ISM Food acquisition. To Marjorie, food is fun. Seeing new products, taste-testing, getting involved with packaging, negotiating pricing, traveling and seeing "her product" on the shelf is what she loves most about her job.

Marjorie has been married, "let's just say, for decades." She has identical twin boys who are 24 years old. She and her husband are now empty nesters. Both of their boys live and work in Boston so they get to see each other frequently, especially on laundry days! They also have two cats, Muppet & Buster. In her spare time, Marjorie enjoys working out and cooking for herself and her family. She also likes to garden, hike, shop, entertain, travel, cross country ski and snowshoe in the winter.
